Habits
-troop 25-80 group members
-home range 7-8squaremile in forest
-40-75 square miles in open country.
-active by day and sleep in tree nests at night.
-nest may be used for several nights
-mainly in trees during wet season and land during dry season.
-each troop has dominant male.
Food and feeding
-two intensive feeding periods early morning and late afternoon.
-fruit of all kinds and insects and honey
-most of it's water needs are supplied by the fruit it eats.
-also eats meat
-other mammals including blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and baboons
-killing almost always done by dominant male.
-smashes head on ground and eats his fill before sharing with the rest of the troop.
Breeding
-year round breeding
-when female comes into heat, she mates with several males.
-males show no competition between themselves
-females have menstrual cycle like humans.
-come into estrus every 36 days, unless they are pregnant
-give birth every three years, after gestation period of about 7-8 months
-young chimp carried by mother for the first 5 months of it's life
-dependent on mother for two years.
-after 4 years old spends most of it's time with other chimps it's age.

-most animal skilled with the use of tools.
-use sticks as weapons and to dig out insects from their nests
-chimps suffer from human diseases ie. Malaria
-only animal other than humans that can identify themselves in mirrors.
-height: males 5 1/2ft. females 4 1/2ft.
Chimps and Man
-chimps #1 threat is man
-driven away when large human populations took over their habitats
-trapping and hunting chimps for zoos and experimental use is highly profitable- in several parts of Africa
-because they are so similar to humans, chimps have been used extensively for testing drugs
