Habits
-lives in troops of five to fifty
-led by dominant older male
-dominant male leads troop through middle canopy of forest in search of food
-monkeys move slowly
-most active in the morning and evening
-rest during the day
-known for loud roar
Food and Feeding
-feeds almost entirely on leaves supplemented with nuts, seeds, fruits and flowers
-occasionally eat small mammals, reptiles and birds
-can eat tough fibrous vegetation
-has an enlarged intestine with strong bacteria that quickly digest the large amounts of food they need to digest
-selective feeder (searches for young, tender leaves and nutritious varieties)
-can live for several weeks on a leaves by selective eating
Breeding
-breed at any time
-both male and female pair with a number of partners
-gestation four and a half months
-females give birth to one young
-baby holds on to mothers underside until it gets a little older then the baby travels on his mothers back
-at 18 - 24 months can travel on own
-male driven out as he becomes sexually mature
-when a male finds a new troop to take over it often kills all the infants in the group

-the monkeys call is to announce the presence of one troop to another to avoid a confrontation
-also the call is to ensure equal share of food for all by spacing the troops apart
-roar can be heard over two miles in the forest
-have the widest distribution of the American primates
